Pregnancy yoga classes can offer so much more than a way to keep moving during pregnancy.
Each time you come to the mat, you have an opportunity to connect with your changing body, become familiar with your breath and develop practical tools that may support you during labour and birth.
Birth is unpredictable, and there is no one way to prepare for exactly how your experience will unfold. But you can gently cultivate the awareness, confidence and trust that help you meet birth one breath and one moment at a time.
Learning to work with sensation
One of the most valuable things we can practise during pregnancy yoga is learning how to be with sensation.
You might hold a strong pose for several breaths and notice the moment your mind begins to say, I want to come out of this.
Instead, you stay curious.
Can you soften your jaw?
Relax your shoulders?
Slow your breathing?
Find somewhere in the body that can soften while another part is working?
Labour asks us to move through waves of increasingly strong sensation. Yoga gives us a safe space to explore how we respond to intensity and to practise staying present rather than immediately reacting to it.
It isn’t about pushing through discomfort. It’s about developing awareness of your body and discovering the tools that help you remain grounded when things feel strong.
Building strength and endurance for labour

Birth can be incredibly physical.
Pregnancy yoga classes help build strength through the legs, hips, glutes and upper body, while also developing the stamina needed to stay in different positions for longer periods.
Standing poses, supported squats, lunges and movements on all fours can all help prepare the body for the physical demands of labour.
But strength is only part of the picture.
Yoga also teaches us when to use effort and when to conserve energy. That balance between doing and resting can become an important skill during labour, particularly when birth unfolds over many hours.
Becoming familiar with your breath
You don’t need to memorise the perfect breathing technique for birth.
What can be helpful is becoming familiar with your breath before labour begins.
During pregnancy yoga classes, we practise noticing the breath, slowing it down and using it intentionally during movement, stillness and stronger sensations.
Over time, returning to the breath can become familiar.
It can offer something simple to come back to when your mind becomes busy or your body is working hard:
This breath. Then the next.
Pregnancy yoga also offers time to simply be with your baby.
Away from appointments and to-do lists, there is an opportunity to pause, breathe and notice the quiet connection already growing between you.
These moments don’t need to be big or profound. Sometimes they are simply a reminder to slow down, place a hand on your belly and connect with the little life you are preparing to welcome.
Exploring movement and positions for labour
Pregnancy yoga classes give you time to explore different ways of moving your body while you are comfortable, calm and able to notice what feels good.
You might practise kneeling, squatting, being on all fours, moving the pelvis, leaning forward or using support.
These aren’t positions you need to remember and reproduce perfectly during labour.
Instead, you are building familiarity with movement and discovering different possibilities for your body.
When labour begins, you have already spent time listening to your body and exploring how movement can help you create space, find comfort and respond instinctively.
Preparing for birth beyond the physical

Pregnancy yoga is about much more than movement.
In each class, we also explore practical ways to prepare for labour and birth. You might learn different positions to support comfort during labour, breathing techniques to help you stay grounded, ways to work with rather than against contractions, and simple comfort measures that can support you throughout the different stages of labour.
These conversations aren’t about creating the perfect birth plan or suggesting there is one right way to give birth.
They are about helping you feel informed, prepared and confident in the choices that feel right for you.
When movement is combined with practical birth education, many women leave class feeling not only physically stronger, but mentally more prepared for the journey ahead.
Growing evidence suggests that regular movement during pregnancy can support both physical and emotional wellbeing. Australian guidelines recommend regular exercise during uncomplicated pregnancies, and research suggests pregnancy yoga may help reduce stress and anxiety while supporting women as they prepare for labour and birth. Every pregnancy is different, so it’s always important to seek advice from your healthcare provider about the type of movement that’s right for you.
Practising both effort and softening

There are moments in yoga when the body needs strength.
And there are moments when the practice is to soften.
Pregnancy yoga gives us the opportunity to explore both.
You can notice where you hold unnecessary tension—perhaps through the jaw, shoulders, hands or face—and practise releasing it while the rest of the body continues to work.
This awareness can be valuable during labour.
Rather than thinking of relaxation as something that only happens when everything is calm, we can practise finding softness within effort.
Building trust in yourself
Perhaps one of the most important parts of preparing for birth is learning to listen inward.
Pregnancy can bring a lot of information, advice and opinions. Yoga creates a little time away from that noise.
A moment to notice.
What am I feeling?
What does my body need?
What feels supportive for me?
There is no particular pose or breathing technique that can determine how your birth will unfold.
But each time you practise listening to your body, responding to sensation, breathing through intensity, moving instinctively and allowing yourself to rest, you are strengthening something that you can carry with you into birth.
Trust in yourself.
Perhaps that’s one of the greatest gifts you can carry into birth.
Finding connection and community

Preparing for birth isn’t something you have to do alone.
One of the most beautiful parts of pregnancy yoga classes is sharing the space with other women who are moving through a similar season of life.
Each week, women arrive with different stories, questions and experiences. Some are preparing to welcome their first baby, while others are balancing pregnancy alongside older children.
Over time, a gentle community begins to form, one where it’s okay to ask questions, share experiences or simply enjoy being surrounded by women who understand this unique season of life.
Often, the conversations before and after class become just as meaningful as the practice itself.
Pregnancy can sometimes feel overwhelming, but having a place where you feel seen, supported and connected can be just as important as the movement on the mat.
Many women say the sense of community becomes one of the most valuable parts of attending pregnancy yoga classes.
Preparing for birth, one practice at a time
Preparing for birth doesn’t have to mean trying to control what will happen.
It can be about building a relationship with your body, your breath and your own inner resources before labour begins.
Pregnancy yoga classes offer an opportunity to practise those things gradually throughout pregnancy, while also taking time each week to slow down, move and connect with your baby.
And perhaps that is one of the most valuable forms of birth preparation—not knowing exactly what birth will ask of you, but feeling that you have the tools to meet it.
